It's U.S versus China in a head-to-head Bristle disc War [Music] If you've yet to use a bristle disc for Cleaning out different surfaces then you May want to check it out now this is not A new item in fact I think 3M released These you know well over 10 years ago so They've been used in various forms from Even down to one inch up to like four Inch angle grinder size uh different Bristle discs different grades of Bristle dust anyway we'll cover some of That but really we want to see do you Have to really buy the 3M version of the Rule lock bristle disc let's find out And see do they really add up or are you Just wasting your money well just what Are bristle discs well 3M developed These again more than a decade ago so They've been around quite some time and They're basically a ceramic integrated Abrasive disc and they require very Little pressure so unlike a sanding Discs or grinding discs and things like That and they're also a lot easier on The surfaces than your typical grinding Wheel sanding pad things like that and Specifically what 3M says about them is They're a molded bristle disc designed To strip the Burr blend finish polish Clean and remove coating so as I Mentioned in the intro things like you Know old gaskets even paint

Even some you know grease things like That so mating surfaces of where you Have gaskets just a various array of Different things that you can use these On and again they operate a lot Different than your typical sanding and Grinding pads and furthermore they say It's an integrated ceramic abrasive Grain that runs cool and cuts fast and Flexible bristles require less pressure Than wire brushes and conform to Contours contains no wire filaments for Improved safety and quick change Attachment makes swapping discs fast and Easy and that's the rolock side of this Is that quick you know quarter turn in To the adapter that you see here so There you have the adapter and just a Quick I don't know quarter half turn Something like that that will Fully engage that roll lock disc or that Bristle disc into that adapter and now You're Off to the Races so that's one Thing that's really nice about this is Just that feature and load and you see These with the Scotch Brite pads and Everything else which by the way this Still holds the Scotch Brite Designations so when you flip over the Bristle disc it says Scotch bright Rollock bristle disc so this is part of The Scotch-Brite side of the business You know 3M is involved in so many Things in Collision safety as well as

Abrasives and then they have their Different sub companies as well so again Part of the Scotch-Brite side of the Company now so on the left we have the Original 3M bristle disc on the right we Have a An Amazon special let's just call it That there's various uh you can see These identical kits in fact they look Identical I don't know if they actually Are but with different brand names and Everything else and you can get them Kind of an all-in-one kit where you get Two whites two green two yellow follow With the adapters they do not have that Roll lock attachments just a looks like A quarter inch 20 thread that's Integrated in to the actual wheel and Then you have this these different studs That you can put on there the jam nut Where you can jam that down so a little Bit different attachment of of the Wheels or of the bristle discs but these Are a lot cheaper as you would assume I'm sure let's go over the pricing Typically we say pricing to the last and Warranty things like that but let's go Over and look at pricing and then let's Actually use these to compare them and See are you saving any money by buying a Kit or buying you know six pieces versus Buying the 3M original And I will say first off you know one of The comments I had several times when I

Posted these on social media is where do You buy them because 3M products can Sometimes be difficult some things You'll find on the shelves other things You're having to order online and most Of the time with 3m you're having to Pick up from a supplier of some source So let's talk about pricing really quick So let's talk about the 3M pricing if You get a one pack if you can find it if You can find a single it's going to run You about 12 bucks okay for one disk you Can find some two packs On some of the colors sometimes and That's going to run you should be Somewhere around 2197 or 22 bucks Now you can also get 10 packs and this Is where you're going to save the most Money but the price well it depends and The reason I say that is a 10 pack is 73 Dollars or a 10 pack is 82 dollars or a 10 pack is 105 dollars and those aren't Different suppliers on Amazon that's From the 3M store on Amazon But the best I can figure is that the 73 Dollars are the green uh the 82 dollars Are the yellow and the white are 105 Dollars And I don't know if this is the reason Or not but the the white is 120 grit the Yellow is 80 grit and the green is 50 Grit so maybe I'm assuming there's less Ceramic junk in the integrated into the Green than there is the Y and that's why

These are the most expensive or those Prices might change from time to time I Don't know that but I'm just going by What we see right now and if we break That down then this is this is easy People I promise uh we divide these by 10 then basically we're playing 7 30 for the green each we're paying 820 For the yellow each and we're paying 10.50 For each of the white so you are going To save a little bit of money if you buy The 10 packs if you need them these Things last a long time they really do Of course you're using them all the time You're going to go through them but if You want to buy them in 10 packs that's Where you're going to save the most Money or you may say you know what I'm Just going to go down to my supply house And buy these and you may save money off Of that they may sell it at less than List and again I don't know what the MSRP or the list price is 3M Products Again are typically sold by you know Some type of distributor or supplier so Getting pricing is a lot of times tough To do now if we look at this pack over Here the Amazon special that's not 3M so This is The not 3M This is the 3M So the not 3M are like 26.97 For the whole kit that's the whole kit

That's everything that's uh two green Two yellow two white with all the stud Adapters and everything else and you're In it for 26.97 which again if we look At that and divide that by six then You're roughly what's that 450 each Would be 27 dollars So you're in it for a lot cheaper so Roughly half of what you are over here And with the 3M you're going to need to Buy an adapter which one adapter will Last you a while or you may want to get A two just you can swap things out Really quickly but regardless that's Going to run you anywhere from 8 to 25 Bucks 26 bucks something like that I Think the 3M was like 26 dollars but There's some knockoff brands of these as Well and not as critical actually the Actual you know cutting discs are so Anyway so you do have some addition into These as well where this pack here Simple 27 bucks out the door and you've Got six awesome bristle discs or are They so let's use them to find out Sure Okay let's just start off with a piece Of typical mild steel and this has been Sitting around a little bit it's got Some rust on it it's probably even may Even have some mil scale on it I'm not Looking to remove Mill scale at all but If it has some on it again I'm not Looking to remove that but just knock

Off some Rust and kind of prep this Surface for let's say paint or just to Make it look a little better and first Up let's just make a little Mark here And To separate our different abrasive discs Or different bristle discs I'm going to Start off with the green Scotch Brite 3M roll lock Bristle disc Okay again quick let's just see here Yeah it looks like a quarter turn about A 90 degree turn and locks that on there And the reason I'm using the Milwaukee 2485 is the fact that I can set the Speed on it in fact I'm going to set That at Speed 2 which should be 15 000 RPM I believe it's ten thousand fifteen Thousand twenty thousand and twenty four Five thousand RPM and by the way these Discs are rated at 25 000 RPM even Though I believe the website says twenty Thousand these are rated right on it at 25 000 RPM so we're well under that Limit at 15 000 RPM in speed two and Again the reason I'm using this is I can Set that speed unlike a Pneumatic that's Going to change based off of air Pressure And I'm going to continually run a 5 amp Hour XC high output battery and make Sure that it's charged so I'll keep a Fresh one in there to make sure that We're comparing Apples to Apples and one

Thing you'll notice on these bristle Discs is when I Bring it up to RPM you'll see it spread Out So you see that really fan out as you Bring it up to RPM and you don't have to Apply a lot of pressure on this so here We go [Music] And by the way there is some mil scale On there but again I'm not worried about That and the nice thing about it is when It fans out I can get in that tight Corner Without an issue [Music] [Music] So pretty quickly I can clean off that Rust and again we could go and you know Put a sanding disc on and take that down To more of a mirror finish I wasn't Looking for that just looking to clean That off and that worked out quite well Very easy to use again not a lot of Pressure now let me change this out Which by the way on the Milwaukee if you Don't know it's a safety collet so once I break that free you can't remove that You have to it's so good you have to Break it free twice just think of that Anyway so break it free again and that Loosens up that safety collet where you Can get that out And I'll put on the Amazon special

You don't have to tighten it twice you Just have to loosen it twice Also a great idea right here Making a wrench That I can hold with one hand and use The other wrench with the other hand and That works good on their straight Grinder as well Anyway so speed two we still have a full Battery and now we have the Amazon disk And let's see how it does Still fans out looks like it maybe Flatten out a little more anyway [Music] [Music] All right [Music] So I can tell you uh seat of the pants Feel it feels almost like I'm using a Rubber band to clean this and meaning It's kind of wants to grab where on the Roll lock if I grabbed an edge of course It would it would want to kind of grab It but really across the surface it felt Very smooth with the roll lock on this One it again feels like at any point in Time it'll kind of grab And then it wants to jump and cavitate I Don't know if you're seeing that So that's just seat of the pants feel as Far as cleanliness I mean it looks like It's cleaning that up about the same So I don't know if I have issue with uh With the you know the ability of it now

That it doesn't look as smooth on the Finish I'm not putting the microscope on It but it just doesn't look as even but Again I'm not going to criticize that Yet I do notice that look how that's Fanning out already and staying there And here's my my roll lock my 3M roll Lock I was using And it's kind of retained its shape now I will say that after a long-term use I've used this one for quite some time You will start to see them number one Kind of degrade like that but also fan Out and fan out just a little bit but Typically not that much So now we're going to go to a painted Surface I'm going to leave on the Amazon Special sorry I don't know of another Term to call that and just going to do Some typical paint cleanup [Music] Foreign [Music] Okay so not terrible at all I cleaned it Up pretty rather quickly Shouldn't say terrible I mean I cleaned It up rather quickly and But again I'm getting that little bit of Cavitation where it's wanting to jump if I've got it flat on the surface or Wanting to grab if I'm on edge So let's see what happens with the 3M So back to 3M green [Music]

Now not one time has it tried to grab on Me even getting close to the edge and I'm able to work that a lot easier and Smoother and you'll notice the Finish is Quite different on this as well I'm not Saying good or bad which is better Foreign But I can definitely work that edge a Lot easier than the other ones [Music] So again The surface looks cleaner on the or I Shouldn't say cleaner but more of an Even application if you will on the 3M Versus the other uh But I can't say that you know one was Faster than the other I think the 3M is A little faster the 3M is definitely a Lot smoother and continues to just kind Of cut away [Music] Back to the Amazon So you can see the marks that we're Putting in with this So I think it's more aggressive But you can definitely feel The aggressiveness of it as well Okay this is not exactly a really dirty Head but I think it'll prove a point Here maybe anyway we're going to go to The yellow and this is the yellow roll Lock so this is the 3M Yellow which is an 80 grit since we Don't have typically on aluminum I would

Use white or 120 grit we're going to use The yellow one here and we'll use it a Little bit and then we'll switch over to The Amazon yellow No Problem Okay I don't recommend using a yellow on Aluminum by the way use white but for The sake of the test uh we wanted to use This so let's change this out and go With the Amazon Okay now we have the Amazon yellow Bristle disc in And we're going to try it on another Exhaust Port here I don't think we're going to have an Issue I'm just wondering if something Else will show up Again there's that cavitation right off The back bat and I'm trying to really Gently go in and look at the yellow it's Leaving right there I literally cannot keep this From cavitating Now I'm honestly I'm not trying to get That to jump but I cannot hold this Steady enough Whether it be at slow speed okay there's Real slow But it's really just making a mess And actually looks like it might be Gouging our head I'm going to go to the even finer grit On the Amazon

And see if I can get that to work Even even this one Again we're leaving white residue all Over it And I cannot get this At real low speed I can but Wow So back to the roll 3M rolock Wide open on two Little cavitation there So if I hit the edge I definitely get Some cavitation But otherwise just kind of flawless Performance really smooth if it grabs The edge number one it does looks like It it will chamfer that a little bit or Roll that over just a touch so don't Think that this won't hurt aluminum you Can definitely hurt it if you're not Being careful but it'd be pretty Difficult to really Do any significant damage Now The Mating Surface again there's going to be Arguments all day long of that you're Hurting The Mating surface and critical Surfaces you shouldn't use it blah blah I'm going to let you make the decision On that but my point is the 3M rolock Discs definitely have a different seat Of the pants feel than the Amazon disk Through and as well I mean Look at the memory that these things Have and they have been used very very Little

And you can see that those are almost to The point of not usable So with saving a little bit of money or Even maybe half your money worth it no I Don't think so in this case I don't Think that you're getting the quality at All in the actual performance of it now The green ones seem to work okay in fact It might even work arguably better or More aggressively than the 3M rollout But honestly the yellow and the white I Really couldn't get to work hardly at All and it was a leaving a lot of the The residue of the actual material on The surface and so I really don't know What that is and again I didn't use it Long enough to really you know determine Anything different but again the the Integrity of this as well of just kind Of flying out and now it's losing all Its integrity You may get good performance out of These and you may say I really don't Care I don't need to you know clean up Cylinder head surfaces where it really Matters of how straight it is and I just Need to remove paint things like that Then great go out and save yourself some Money we'll have a link in the Description you can find these all over Amazon for the kits we'll also have a Link in the description to the 3M roll Lock where it's going to cost you yes Twice as much maybe a little more than
