Harbor Freight recently announced two new impact wrenches in their HERCULES lineup: this HCB86B High Torque model and the HCB85B Ultra Torque impact wrench with 1,400 ft-lbs of breakaway torque. We’ll be reviewing both of these, so you can find the link below. This High Torque model is supposed to deliver 1,200 ft-lbs of breakaway torque and it have 4 different drive modes. You get 3 power modes and an Auto mode. The HCB86B is just $180 and it comes with a 5-year warranty. Batteries and chargers for this Hercules line will have a 3-year warranty.

Can the Harbor Freight high torque Impact wrench really deliver what they Claim [Music] Today we have the Hercules HCB 86b and It’s their brushless 20 volt half inch High torque impact wrench now they also Have an ultra torque model which by the Way will be reviewing this tomorrow so If you’re catching this kind of live or Same day tomorrow you’ll see the ultra Torque review but today’s all about the High torque they claim 1200 foot-pounds Now let’s quit wasting time we’ll take a Closer look at each of these features We’ll move right over to the test rig And put this thing to work then we’ll Come back and talk about pricing on the Tool the batteries the Chargers and About warranties all right let’s take a Closer look here at the Hercules HCB 86b Now as we mentioned in the intro this is The high torque model they also have an Ultra torque model which also if you’re Catching this kind of as they come out Will release the ultra torque tomorrow If it’s been a while then they should be Available as well we’ll have a link in The description and probably a link Floating around somewhere on the screen Anyway let’s get back to this one so This is the high torque model 1200 foot Pounds of torque supposedly Breakaway Torque uh four different Drive modes or
Speed modes if you will if you look down Here on the base of the tool once I pull The trigger it should light up yeah so That little circle thing is that’s the Fourth motor that’s the uh Auto removal Mode and and bolt removal mode or auto Mode and bolt removal which the auto is Going to basically stop the tool if You’re in Titan where it automatically Stop the tool once it gets to a certain Point and uh and then on the bolt Removal mode as soon as it sits it’s Broken free it will either slow it down Or stop it we’ll actually show that in Action and then we just have one two and Three now those speeds are going to Increase with each one of those so if I Put it in low you’ll see Max Speed That’s max speed and Max Speed on that Is 500 RPM in mode one but you see I get A variable speed trigger so with the Variable speed trigger I can really make It go as slow as I want to either in Forward or reverse but then at wide open Throttle that’s going to give me 500 RPM And then in mode two You can hear that’s a little bit faster And again I get the variable speed Trigger but that’s going to give me a Max of 1150 RPM and then in Speed 3 That’s going to get our our maximum RPM Of 1700 RPM With wide open throttle and you see we
Get an LED light here on the bottom and Then impacts per minute are going to be Anywhere from zero to 2400 and that’s Going to vary with the RPM so up to 2400 Impacts per minute as well now it’s Pretty obvious we get a brushless motor On here and then we’re running on their 20 volt battery platform we have a 5 amp Hour here actually we have two of those Then we get an 8 Amp Hour battery that We’ve got here sitting aside and a 12 Amp hour battery now the 5 amp hours are Going to have your typical 18650 cells And then the 8 Amp Hour and 12 amp hour Are going to have the higher capacity Higher performing 21 700 cells so you’ll See not only obviously is it a bigger Battery pack because it’s an 8 Amp Hour But also you can see the cells are Larger because the cells go Crossways And you see how much wider this battery Is than this so again the eight amp hour And 12 amp hour are going to have the Better performing 217 100 cells and We’ll run it with the 5 amp hour and Then change over to the to the eight to See if we see any increase and then this Is their dual Bay charger and it will Simultaneously it’s going to charge both Batteries at the same time so definitely Increase that uh charging timer decrease Your charging time and increase your Efficiency with that dual Bay charger And we get dual USB ports out as well
Let’s get this on the scales and then Let’s go over and actually use this Thing So pounds and ounces with a 5 amp hour Seven pounds seven and a half ounces so Right at seven and a half pounds And uh let’s wait without the battery I Think it’s like six pounds yeah six Pounds a half an ounce and then if you Wanted the the eight amp hour Obviously that’s going to change with Your battery pack So now you’re talking about an eight and A half pound tool so you’ve upped it by A pound In 12 amp hour that’s just a beast of a Tool nine and a half nine six and a half Ounces so you’ve jumped two pounds by Adding that battery but with the 5 amp Hour which would probably be a pretty Common combos you’re going to be seven And a half pounds and as far as size Goes you’re looking at just about 11 Inches tall ten and three quarter inches Tall and then from the front of the Anvil to the back of the tool right at Nine inches long Pretty comfortable handle you get rubber Over molding through here it is not Uncomfortable at all it’s a little broad Through here that doesn’t bother me but Other tools that are broad people kind Of mention that I have a little bit Larger hands so again it doesn’t bother
Me but it is pretty thick right here Through the belly of this handle so if You like a more narrow grip you might Not be crazy about this but again it’s Not anything oversized I just do notice That it does kind of fill up the hand And it’s got a pretty large handle there Let’s go use this Beast All right let’s get started with the High torque uh first we’re going to take Our torque tool and we’re going to Torque uh these Fasteners to we’re going To start at 150 foot-pounds and then go To 200 and then 300 400 500 600 700 and Then we’ll start back here and do 800 900 and a thousand and then we’ll move Up from there if we need to so let’s go Ahead and get these things torqued All right All right so we’re gonna get started at 150 foot-pounds let’s make sure this is In mode three that is not Auto removal One two three so there we’re in mode Three let’s make sure we got a full Battery yes we have a full battery and Let’s make sure we’re in reverse Yes we’re in Reverse so bolt removal Here we go 150 foot-pounds which by the Way we start at 150 because that’s as Low as our torque setting tool will go So we’ll start at 150 and then we’ll go To 200 and then increment by 100 Foot-pounds each time so 150 here we go Foreign
I didn’t really explain our process if You’ve seen our our testing before then You understand it but what we will do we Will let this impact for 10 seconds if It breaks it free or starts to break the Faster free within that 10 seconds we Will go ahead and let it finish Loosening that Fastener unless it just Goes into Overkill where you know we’re Hammering on it for 25 seconds and then We’re just going to stop it but if in That 10 second window it is moving that Faster we’re going to give it that Faster and we’re going to let it go Ahead and continue To hammer that Fastener free or to Loosen that faster so 150 200 300 and 400 no problem at all Which we did not anticipate to have any Issues there now let’s step up to our Larger Fasteners here and now we’re Going to start at 600 foot pound or 500 We’re gonna go five six and seven And by the way you can watch these hash Marks give you a little visual indicator Of whether or not it is moving still in Reverse yeah still in Reverse still a Full battery and still in feet in speed Mode three here we go Foreign [Applause] [Applause] Now we’re going to come back and we’re Going to tighten these starting at 800
Foot-pounds and go eight nine and one Thousand Foreign So let’s get back to it starting at 800 Foot pounds so 800 900 and 1000 foot Pounds and again let’s ensure we’ve got A full battery we are in Speed three or mode three and let’s Ensure we’re going backwards there we go 800 foot pounds Foreign [Applause] So while we go back through and torque These I’ll run these down real quick and Show the auto removal mode so we’ve Eclipsed out a thousand foot pounds and We’re about to start on 1100 but now I’m In the auto removal mode or the auto Mode and you’ll see here I’m going to Keep my finger on the trigger even after It starts hammering You see my fingers still in the trigger And it shut the tool down so I’ll do That one more time So it hammers on it just a few seconds And then shuts the tool down again my Finger stolen the trigger now I’ll go Into reverse still in the auto mode Okay Okay so it once it says it broke it free So it was given 100 of power and then Once it sensed it it was broken free it Paused and then started going at a Slower pace so it’s not going wide open
If you will But it’s not going to stop in the Removal mode it will stop on the Tightening You see again it stops it Okay let’s still make sure we still have A full battery uh we are let’s go back To speed mode three and we’re still In Reverse there we go Starting at 1100 foot pounds so 11 12 And 1300. Foreign Okay I think it budged it there in the Beginning but then I’ll let it hammer on It for 30 seconds and I’m not going to Go any further with that so it’s it was Not able to break free the 1100 Foot-pounds it did uh the thousand And getting to 1100 doesn’t seem to Break it free let’s Take off our battery By the way in that hammering yeah we’re Down to three cells now I’m gonna throw on the eight amp hour Battery Full battery Reverse Yeah 1200 foot pounds Okay we’ll call it there we’ll give it 11 on the 8 Amp Hour I don’t believe the 12 amp hour is going to do anything We’ll let it rest a few minutes and then We’ll come back and throw the 12-0 on There but I really don’t think you’re
Going to see a difference because They’re both 21 700 cells and they Shouldn’t have voltage drop with that Full of a battery so anyway we’ll try it In a moment otherwise we’re looking at 1100 foot-pounds with the 8-0 battery 12v battery 1200 foot-pounds Okay it did it however just like in the Case before Just like in the case before both of Those have been hammered on by the Previous battery so I’m going to reset These to 11 and 1200 foot-pounds you Know what we’ve already got this the 1300 We got this fresh at 1300 foot-pounds Let’s see if the 12v battery can do it Foreign It took a while but it did it so we will Claim that the 12-0 can accomplish 1300 Foot-pounds [Applause] And because we know everyone will want To know We’ll go ahead and try it on 1400 Foot-pounds as well still speed three uh Still have a full battery Here we go Foreign I think we eclipse the time limit on That but it did finally Break Free the 1400 foot-pounds but it kind of settled In on the nut initially and moved the
Socket a little but I don’t think it Moved it until about 20 seconds a Thousand foot pounds is no slouch that’s Quite impressive to be honest on the 5 Amp hour battery now if you want the Claims of the 1200 foot-pounds of Breakaway torque that they claim you’re Going to have to step up to an 8 Amp Hour or 12 amp hour battery so the 21700 Cells we didn’t see the performance in The 5 amp hour two Eclipse that thousand Foot pounds but again this is not exact Science here we’re talking about Fasteners that you know have oil or Don’t have oil or have rust or don’t Have rust we try to keep it as equal as Possible but again you can’t just label A tort on a rich in fact ask the Different companies how they test their Impact wrenches and you probably won’t Get an answer anyway still an impressive Tool now let’s talk about pricing now This by itself bear tool is 179 dollars That comes the you get the brushless Motor in the tool and that’s about it For 179 bucks 180 bucks let’s call it so The HEB 86b bear tool 180 bucks you get A five year warranty on that that’s very Impressive now if you want to buy Batteries everything’s kind of a la Carte so a 5 amp hour battery is going To run you about 70 bucks and then if You look at Chargers a charger is going To cost you about 40 bucks and a dual
Charger like this one is going to run You 65 dollars so you’re looking at Seventy dollars for a 5 amp hour you’re Looking at 65 dollars for a charger You’re looking at 180 dollars for the Tool so if you wanted to get two 5 amp Hour batteries that’s 140 plus a 65 That’s 205 you add to 180 so now you’re At 385 dollars for two 5 amp hour Batteries a dual charger and a tool so You’re still probably 100 bucks cheaper Than most of your kind of higher name Brand uh tools in the high torque world With two batteries so you’re still doing Quite well and by the way the batteries And chargers carry a three year warranty On them now I think I kind of briefly Mentioned that the 5 amp power is going To have your 18650 cells in them and Your 8 Amp Hour and 12 amp hour Batteries are going to have the 21 700 Higher capacity higher performing cells In them now you may be able to kind of Track along with Harbor Freight and Catch one of their ads and get one of Their coupons and be able to save a Little bit of money on this as well so You may be able to get down off of that You know 300 and something dollars to Get you a full kit regardless it’s still A decent deal and the performance is Definitely there so quite impressed with This guy especially for the price point So check it out for yourself again it’s
